Poles For The Future

RStandard modular composite utility poles are a new product introduced exclusively to Western Australia by Western Poles Company.

Developed in Canada, RStandard composite poles are stronger than other poles due to the presence of a patented polyurethane-based resin. These poles offer proven advantages over existing resin technologies. They are lighter than wood or metal due to the qualities of the polyurethane resin and the poles’ unique modular design.

RStandard modular composite utility poles are one-third the weight of wooden poles and two-thirds the weight of steel poles. They are more environmentally friendly than either wood or other technologies because they are a manufactured product. The resin system used contains no volatile organic compounds and emits no hazardous air pollutants.

Following successful initial installations in Canada, acceptance of the poles has seen them introduced into service in the United States and now Australia. The first resin poles were installed in the Eastern States in early 2006.

The RStandard resin poles offer many other benefits over other alternatives, including:

  • Reduced whole-of-life costs due to lower transportation and installation expenses
  • Require virtually no maintenance over an estimated 80-year lifespan
  • Fire retardant due to the resin compound's natural resistance to fire
  • Excellent durability due to the ability to withstand virtually all environmental conditions without chemical treatment, making them impervious to insect, bird, animal, moisture and corrosive damage
  • Non-conductive, which maximises the safety level for the work crews and the general public, with the risk of pole-top fires eliminated
  • Vehicle impact absorption, ensuring far less accidental vehicle damage. Damage to only the lower pole module is a high probability, which can then be replaced whilst leaving the upper pole modules intact and usable. Restoration costs are correspondingly lower.
